How This Blog Attracted 100,000 Visitors in the First 30 Days

I know this blog has a long way to go, but we are off to a good start. I am not an expert. I don’t have the experience. I gleaned good ideas and/or inspiration from each of these people and sites. If you intend to create a high traffic blog, apply the knowledge provided by these people.
I am grateful for the following people, websites, and blog posts:
- Steve Pavlina – How to Make Money From Your Blog – This post is not only about making money, it is about providing value in your blog. He is brutally honest in this post. Do you have what it takes?
- Darren Rowse – His site Problogger.net provides value each day. I found this post valuable. My first inbound link came from his Problogger Group Writing Project.
- Wendy Piersall – emomsathome.com provides value with every post. Her Values Conflict series (post 1, post 2, post 3) helped me eliminate mental obstacles to success.

- Richard MacManus – He compiles great information on next generation web technology at Read/Write Web. This post helped me understand social bookmarking.

- Joe Vitale – At Beyond Marketing, I learned how to apply the ‘Law of Attraction’ to my life. Joe is dynamite. Read this post. See this movie. Watch him on Larry King Nov. 2nd and Nov 16th.
- Lyman Reed – Creating a Better Life linked to some of my first posts. Lyman gave me great advice on dealing with comment trolls, ask him and he might tell you. When I was down, his encouragement was priceless.
- Josh Kaufman – His blog and his concept of the Personal MBA inspired me to break through my own limiting beliefs about education and success.
- Uncommon Business Ideas - It forces me to think outside my limiting beliefs.
- Charles Haanel – In The Master Key System, Charles showed me how power lies within myself. I recommend this book to everyone, no matter what you want to accomplish.
- The Balanced Life Center – This blog inspires me to be the best I can be. Thanks for hosting so many carnivals and the Season of Gratitude.
- Seth Godin – Every post is a gem. But this one stood out.
- Jonathan Leger – SEO tips. The advice in this post has worked wonders.
- Steve at The Fast Lane – This post says it all. Do you intend to be successful? Then what do you think about?
- Jakob Nielsen – This article from 1997 is buried treasure.
- Tony Clark – Success from the Nest inspires me. The design is perfect. It’s simple and classy. Tony is living a lifestyle I intend to live.
- The blog starter checklist on Squidoo.
- Blog Carnival.com – Find your niche and join a carnival.

I’m impressed with your success and your site in general. Very substantive material. You are adding value.
I did a run-through Technorati’s top 100 blogs recently, and one of your “mentors,” Steve Pavlina, is the only one I ran across that was adding value of the hundred I reviewed. (I will have to qualify this statement in that he was adding personal value as opposed to the sharing of technical know-how, which many in that range do.) The remainder were news, trendy items, fashion, fashion misteps, and just plain junk. It give me hope that adding value is recognized by the blogosphere.
For what it’s worth, one thing that surprises me — you don’t have any ads up. One aspect of personal freedom is financial freedom, and I suspect you would be making enough from the site for it to pay for itself already. It’s a dirt-simple process, even for a non-techie like me. I do think this was probably a choice on your part, rather than a Homer Simpson moment, and I’m curious as to your reason for it.

I am actually curious about your success. I read through your list but i was wondering what were the main things you’ve done to hit 100k? The list was insightful but just going though the list wont get anyone to that number.
I’m interested in hearing about the actual steps that you took to reach 100k. I saw blog carnivals and submissions to the social bookmarking sites as contributors but many people do that and they dont hit that number in such a short time.
I’m wondering if Darren’s group writing project that you’ve contributed to on your second post was the major factor in your success.

That was my best month ever…
It was simply working hard, coming up with good material, networking, and using social sites like, Digg, Reddit, SU, and Carnivals. Write stuff people want to read and you’ll do fine, if you get it submitted to the social sites.
I haven’t done as well since then because I launched with a flury of energy I haven’t had since.

Steve, great info - thank you for sharing. I’m using some of these tips to grow my own blog and many of them are working quite well. Are you also hosting a radio show? I’ve starting doing that and already have 50 RSS visitors, so it’s growing. I may start recording daily, instead of weekly, which I think will drive that traffic considerably faster.

A very impressive post. How could you attract so many visitors in only one month still amazes me, because doing all promotional chores takes a lot of time. How many hours a day you worked to promote your blog?
I am blogging from 2 years, and at the start I didn’t take it seriously, but now when I am seriously involved in it, I can understand how much efforts are needed to make a blog successful.

Many of the bloggers on your list also helped me though I have not had near that many visitors. I recently discovered the power of the catchy headline combined with social bookmarking sites. The carnivals have provided a huge amount of unexpected links (thanks for the tip Pavlina). Can you name the top 3-5 factors that have generated that level of traffic?
